This is a line that I teach in all of my courses. It simply gets used every time a question gets asked in the gym. Do I use peroxide in the spray bottles? Well if the goal is to kill germs on the fabric of the equipment then sure. Do I “batch out” the terminal at night? Well if the goal is to make nightly deposits then yes. Do I do my cardio after I strength train? Well if your goal is fat loss then yes.
The list goes on and on. It does though, assist in the training of personal trainers and their clients to learn to focus on the task at hand. Too many times do we find clients and even trainers scattered around the gym floors finding multiple moves to pound their clients or themselves into submission. Some like to combine balance movements with strength training or light weight movements while on the treadmill etc,. etc…
Still the statement has to get asked, “if the goal is…..”
We need to spend time asking our clients, let alone ourselves, exactly what our goals are before we start engaging in fitness programs. Some want to tone or lose weight, while others want to build muscle or run a marathon. Take the time to establish goals and then build programs to achieve that. Also as a client, be sure to know what it is you want to do with yourself before asking advice from a trainer. You are about to commit a large amount of funds to reach a goal. Do you really know what that goal is? Are you actually willing to take the plunge and do what the trainer asks? Do you have the “will power” to make it through to the end? If your goal is to reach your goal, then go for it. Just be focussed and do what it takes to make it happen!! -Jeff

Meet Jenna–Personal Trainer
This week is all about Jenna! Jenna is a newly qualified personal trainer and fitness competitor.
Name: Jenna Richardson
Position: Personal Trainer
Level: 1
Qualifications: First Aid, CPR, Behavioral Science Technology Diploma
Mini Bio: I am 25 years old and have been immersed in the world of physical fitness for about 3 years now. I am a Certified Personal Trainer through Sports Performance Institute. I am currently training for the OPA figure competition that will be held in Ottawa this coming November. My vocational history includes working in the social services field and I think that this speaks to my desire to help people and what type of person I am.
People who know me would describe me as dedicated, friendly, supportive, and very organized. When training, I like to challenge people while maintaining a very encouraging attitude that makes people feel comfortable that trying their hardest is enough. I will never ask for anything more than your “Max Effort.”
Company Info: I co-own Max Effort Training with Neil Dillon.
Favorite Exercise: I can’t pick one favorite; that’s too difficult. I love anything that is really challenging. I can name a few favorites: Single-legged Romanian Dead Lift, Split Squats, Pull Ups, Elastic Band Sprints, and Push Up – DB Row.
Favorite Athlete: I don't know if she's my favorite, but I like Emily Stirling. She is a professional figure competitor as well as personal trainer and nutrition coach. She is an impressive athlete and in amazing shape. I like to watch some of her workout videos for new ideas.
Best Training Tip: “Keep at it” make working out and being active a part of your lifestyle; something you just do every day – like brushing your teeth. If working out is not your "cup of tea" try to find ways to incorporate it into something you like doing and change your perspective about it. Think of being active as something that challenges you, is good for your health, and can be fun instead of thinking of it as a chore. Also, stay positive. Lasting results may take longer to achieve than you’d like, but it’s definitely worth the wait.
Biggest Passion: I love training and I love learning about nutrition and I am in luck because there's always more to learn! It may sound funny, but my passion is to make people "believers." What is mean is that I love to see people who are new to working out and maybe not too excited about it, transform and "catch the workout bug" and really start to enjoy and look forward to each of their training sessions. I love to watch them achieve their goals (do that one more push up, lose that extra 5 pounds- whatever their goals are).

Biography Time
About 3 days ago, Jeff and I were talking marketing at SPI. After brainstorming some interesting topics, we thought it would be a great idea to introduce our team. The partners, the trainers, employees and co-op students–since we are the ones you see on a daily basis.
Getting into this topic more, we thought of some questions that you, the reader and the clients would want to know about the trainers training you! Where did they come from, what did they study, what are their passions and some of their best tips for success on training.
Here at SPI, our team comes from all over the place and each bring a unique perspective to the gym. Each specializing in different athletic training. Ball training, heavy weight, light weight, national competitions, and professional athletes.
Over the next few weeks, we'll be posting about our team at SPI for you to learn about who works here and for the exact reason why! Let us know what you think. -Samantha

The Beginning
Welcome to the first Blog from the Sports Performance institute. This is a very exciting time for us and we are pleased to finally jump into the new communications world.
The Sport Performance Institute is a company that certifies Personal Trainers, aerobics and Pilates instructors. We have been doing this for more than 25 years now and continue to deliver the most accurate and up to date information about the fitness world to our clients and certified alumni. Each year we add new courses to assist our trainers in upgrading their skills, while also allowing them the ability to discover a possible avenue to specialize in. Many say that they have a “passion for fitness”, but find later on that the passion is even more specific. Through our multi - level courses we help the trainers to develop and zone in on a specific area of fitness that may be their true passion.
We are also an international organization, that has franchises across the Middle East and will soon be opening in China. Fitness and health is a passion and necessity for everyone across this great planet and we are thrilled to be able to assist in the growth of the education of a healthy lifestyle. -Jeff
